Roller Coaster

By Michael Moore

Roller coaster
Up
Down
Sideways, sometimes
A wild ride, most always
Demanding, of course
Also expecting
Expecting that,
Because I love you
I’ll go along
For the ride

Always

But the downside is
A weariness
That sets in
A fatigue
One hears about
‘Metal fatigue’
Can cause
Something to become
Broken
I offer

‘Are we broken?’
You ask
‘Not yet – I don’t think’

Pregnant silence
Follows

‘What are you thinking?’
You ask

‘Like a roller coaster’
My reply

Your raised eyebrow
Demands clarity

‘The downside is,
I lose you. . .
Upside?
‘No more motion sickness’

It’s your smile that hurts the most
